Sometimes You Know You’re Safe, But Your Body Doesn’t Feel That Way

Sometimes you can understand something logically, but still feel emotionally affected.

You may know that what happened is in the past, but your body still reacts like it is happening now. You may know you are safe, but still feel anxious, guarded, or on edge. You may know you are worthy, capable, or loved, but still struggle with shame, self-doubt, or fear.

This is one of the most frustrating parts of trauma, anxiety, and painful life experiences. You may have talked about what happened, thought about it, journaled about it, or tried to move on from it — but something inside still feels unresolved.

Painful experiences can become “unresolved” in the nervous system. When that happens, they can show up as anxiety, emotional reactivity, avoidance, panic, shame, relationship struggles, or unhelpful beliefs about yourself.

You might find yourself thinking:

“Why do I still feel this way?”

“Why can’t I just move on?”

“Why does my body react so strongly when I know I’m okay?”

At SF Counseling & Wellness, we understand that healing is not always about knowing something differently. Sometimes your mind already understands, but your body and emotions need support catching up.

EMDR Helps Your Brain and Body Process What Still Feels Unresolved

At SF Counseling & Wellness, both of our clinicians are trained in EMDR therapy, which stands for Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing.

EMDR is a therapy approach that helps the brain and body process difficult experiences in a more supported way. It is often used for trauma, PTSD, CPTSD, anxiety, relationship struggles, and unhelpful beliefs that feel hard to move past.

This is our thing. We work with people who feel stuck in old pain, old fears, old patterns, and old beliefs that still feel true, even when part of them knows they are not.

EMDR goes beyond simply talking about what happened. Instead, it helps your brain reprocess experiences that may still feel emotionally charged so they can feel less intense, less present, and less disruptive in your daily life.

How EMDR Therapy Works

EMDR therapy helps your brain and nervous system process memories, fears, or beliefs that may not have been fully processed at the time they happened.

When something painful or overwhelming occurs, the brain sometimes stores that experience differently. Instead of becoming a memory that feels like “something that happened back then,” it can continue to feel emotionally active in the present.

That is why a certain tone of voice, conflict, silence, rejection, criticism, or reminder of the past can feel so intense. Your brain may know the situation is different, but your nervous system may still be responding from an old wound.

During EMDR, your therapist helps you focus on a memory, belief, emotion, or body sensation while using bilateral stimulation. This may include eye movements, tapping, or other forms of back-and-forth stimulation.

The goal is not to erase the memory. The goal is to help the memory feel less emotionally overwhelming. Over time, EMDR can help painful experiences feel more like something that happened, rather than something you are still living inside of.

EMDR can be especially helpful when you feel like you already understand the issue logically, but still feel emotionally impacted by it.

For example, you may know:

“I am safe now.”

“I am not responsible for what happened.”

“I am allowed to have needs.”

“I am worthy of love.”

“I can trust myself.”

But emotionally, those things may not fully feel true yet. EMDR helps create space for those truths to feel more believable in your mind, body, and relationships.

The Fears You May Have About EMDR

A lot of people feel nervous before starting EMDR. That is completely understandable.

You may wonder:

“Do I have to talk about everything in detail?”

“What if I get overwhelmed?”

“What if I’m not ready?”

“What if I can’t handle what comes up?”

“What if EMDR makes things worse?”

“What if my trauma is too much or not bad enough?”

These fears are common, and they matter.

EMDR should not feel like being pushed into something before you are ready. Before processing deeper memories or experiences, we spend time building safety, trust, grounding skills, and emotional support. We also take time to establish if EMDR is the right fit for you before beginning. We want you to feel prepared, not thrown into the deep end.

You also do not always have to share every detail out loud. Some clients appreciate that EMDR allows them to process painful experiences without needing to verbally explain every part of what happened.

At SF Counseling & Wellness, we move at your pace. If something feels too intense, we slow down. If you need more time building safety first, we take that time.

You Can Trust Us With This Work

Both clinicians at SF Counseling & Wellness are trained in EMDR, and we use it through a compassionate, trauma-informed lens.

We understand that EMDR can bring up vulnerable material. We also understand that healing work requires more than just using a technique. It requires trust, pacing, safety, and a therapist who knows how to help you stay grounded while doing deeper work.

We work with trauma, relationship wounds, anxiety, unhelpful beliefs, and nervous system responses regularly. We know that people often come to therapy feeling frustrated because they have already tried to “think their way out of it,” but still feel stuck.

That does not mean you are failing. It means the wound may need a different kind of support.

EMDR can help create movement where talking alone has not been enough.

What Makes Our Approach Different

At SF Counseling & Wellness, we do not treat EMDR like a cold, mechanical process.

We believe EMDR works best when it is grounded in a strong therapeutic relationship. You are not just a set of symptoms, memories, or negative beliefs. You are a whole person with a story, a nervous system, protective parts, relationship patterns, fears, strengths, and hopes for healing.

Our approach is warm, relational, and trauma-informed. We care about helping you feel emotionally safe before going deeper. We care about understanding the context of your pain, not just processing it quickly.

We also believe EMDR can be especially powerful when paired with a deeper understanding of attachment, relational trauma, anxiety, and the parts of you that learned to protect yourself.

This work matters to us because we know how painful it can be to feel stuck in something you logically know you want to move past. We also know how meaningful it can be when those memories, fears, and beliefs finally begin to feel less powerful.

Healing is not about erasing your story. It is about helping your story feel less heavy to carry.
